भगवान जगन्नाथ मंदिर और रथयात्रा पर्व विश्‍वप्रसिद्ध हैं

विश्‍व के समस्त हिन्दुओं के बीच पुरी धार्मिक केन्द्र के रूप में चर्चित है। यह पवित्र और पूज्यनीय तीर्थस्थल भारत के पूर्वी तट पर स्थित है। पुरी को उड़ीसा राज्य के सर्वाधिक लोकप्रिय पर्यटन स्थलों में शुमार किया जाता है। यहां का भगवान जगन्नाथ मंदिर और रथयात्रा पर्व विश्‍वप्रसिद्ध हैं। द्वारका, बद्रीनाथ, रामेश्‍वर और जगन्नाथ भारत के पवित्र चार धाम हैं। इस कारण पुरी का लोकप्रियता और महत्व बहुत अधिक बना हुआ है। बंगाल की खाड़ी के तट पर दूर-दूर फैली सफेद रेत में सैलानी अठखेलियां करते हुए देखे जा सकते हैं। यहां से सूर्योदय और सूर्यास्त के नजार बड़े मनमोहक होते हैं।

प्राचीन काल में पुरी कलिंग साम्राज्य का हिस्सा था, जिसे सम्राट अशोक ने जीत लिया था। उसके बाद अनेक शासकों के हाथ से होता हुआ पुरी  1803 में अंग्रेजों के अधीन हो गया।

पुरी में देखने योग्य

जगन्नाथ मंदिर- भारत के चार धामों में शामिल यह मंदिर देश के सर्वाधिक पवित्र तीर्थस्थलों में एक है। 12वीं शताब्दी में चोडागंगा ने अपनी राजधानी परिवर्तन के उपलक्ष्य में इसे बनवाया था। जगन्नाथ मंदिर की ऊंचाई 65 मीटर है और इसे भारत के सबसे ऊंचे मंदिरों में एक माना जाता है। इसे कलिंग वास्तु शैली में बनाया गया है। मंदिर चारों तरफ से 20 फीट ऊंची दीवार से घिरा है। जिनके आसपास बहुत से छोटे मंदिर बने हुए हैं। इस मंदिर की एक खासियत यह है कि इसमें जाति के आधार पर किसी तरह का भेदभाव नहीं किया जाता।

गुंडिचा घर- गुंडिचा घर या गुंडिचा मंदिर पुरी का लोकप्रिय दर्शनीय स्थल है। यह मंदिर भगवान की चाची गुंडिचा का घर माना जाता है। मान्यता है कि रथयात्रा के दौरान भगवान यहां 9 दिन तक ठहरते हैं। जगन्नाथ मंदिर से आने वाली रथयात्रा में भगवान जगन्नाथ, बालभद्र और सुभद्रा गुंडिचा मंदिर आते है, जहां उनकी चाची पादोपीठा खिलाकर उनका स्वागत करती हैं।

पुरी बीच- बंगाल की खाड़ी के किनारे दूर-दूर तक फैला यह बीच सैलानियों को खूब लुभाता है। इस बीच में मिठाईयों और नाश्ते की अनेक दुकानें देखी जा सकती हैं। चाय या कॉफी की चुस्कियां लेते हुए सैलानियों को यहां टहलना बहुत भाता है। बीच में टहलते वक्त जब समुद्र का जल पैरों को धोता है तो एक अलग ही आनंद की अनुभूति होती है। सूर्यास्त के नजारे यहां से बेहद आकर्षक प्रतीत होते हैं।

बालकृष्ण मंदिर- पुरी के अनेक दर्शनीय स्थलों के समान इन्द्रद्युमना कुंड भी अपने धार्मिक महत्व के लिए काफी प्रसिद्ध है। इसी कुंड में बालकृष्ण मंदिर है। इस मंदिर के निकट उड़ीसा के राजा इन्द्रद्युमना को समर्पित एक लघु मंदिर भी देखा जा सकता है। पुरी का यह पवित्र कुंड गुंडिचा घर के पश्चिम में है।

अथरनाला ब्रिज- मांडुपुर नदी पर बने इस पुल का निर्माण 13वीं शताब्दी में हुआ था। नगर के प्रवेश द्वार पर स्थित यह ब्रिज 85 मीटर लंबा और 11 मीटर चौड़ा है। मंदिर को मध्यकाल की निर्माण कला का बेहतरीन उदाहरण माना जाता है।

कोणार्क- पुरी से 35 किमी. दूर स्थित कोणार्क ब्लैक पेगोडा के नाम से मशहूर सूर्य मंदिर के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। कोणार्क की रेतीली भूमि पर स्थित यह मंदिर पुरातत्व और ऐतिहासिक दृष्टि से बड़ा महत्वपूर्ण है। मंदिर के अलावा यहां के कोणार्क बीच को पूर्वी तट के सबसे रोमांटिक बीचों में शुमार किया जाता है।

चिल्का झील- 1100 वर्ग किमी. के क्षेत्र में फैली एशिया की इस सबसे बड़ी झील को हनीमूनर्स पैराडाइज कहा जाता है। सर्दियों के मौसम में यहां बड़ी संख्या में प्रवासी पक्षियों को आगमन होता है। यह झील बाहरी पर्यटकों के अलावा स्थानीय लोगों के बीच भी काफी प्रसिद्ध है। झील में अनेक छोटे-छोटे द्वीप है, जो बेहद खूबसूरत प्रतीत होते हैं।

कैसे जाएं

वायु मार्ग- भुवनेश्वर में स्थित एयरपोर्ट यहां का सबसे करीबी एयरपोर्ट जो 62 किमी. की दूरी पर है। दिल्ली, कोलकाता, मुंबई, चैन्नई, हैदराबाद आदि शहरों से यहां के लिए नियमित फ्लाइट्स उपलब्ध हैं।

रेल मार्ग- पुरी सीधे तौर पर कोलकाता, दिल्ली, अहमदाबाद विशाखापट्टनम, विजयवाडा, तिरूपति आदि शहरों से रेलमार्ग द्वारा जुड़ा है। इन शहरों से चलने वाली नियमित ट्रेनें पुरी को देश के बहुत से हिस्सों से जोड़ती हैं।

सड़क मार्ग- पुरी उड़ीसा के सभी प्रमुख शहरों और पड़ोसी राज्यों से सड़क मार्ग द्वारा जुड़ा है। राज्य परिवहन निगम की बसें पुरी के लिए नियमित चलती रहती हैं।

Puri is a renowned city and headquarters of Puri District in the Indian state of Odisha (formerly Orissa) (Latitude: 19° 48' 0 N, Longitude: 85° 50' 60 E), also known as The Abode of Lord Jagannath.

Jagannath Puri or Purusottama Puri (approximately 1 and a half hours or 60 km from Bhubaneswar by bus {about Rs. 25 to Rs. 150), about 2 hours by train) is a pilgrimage town with the famous temple of Lord Jagannath (means Lord of the Universe) and is a major tourist destination with all its beautiful and pleasant sights. There are many hotels, most overseas tourists stay near to Chakratirtha Road (C.T. Road) - try Hotel Lotus - for the best of star hotels like hotel holiday resort, mayfair beach resort or you can ask rickshaws for 'Sea Beach Road or Swargadwara'. Some good hotels are Hotel Puri and Hotel New Sea Hawk (in Swargadwar) The Sun temple at Konark is also near by. If you go to Puri by road from Bhubaneswar you will go past Pipli with its beautiful applique handicrafts, worth a look. The Puri sea beach is a major attraction with its fantastic sea face view and golden sand, the water is a bit rough (which is good if you like to surf).

By train

Puri is well connected by Railways. Trains are from Kolkata (Howrah jn), New Delhi, Ahmedabad, etc. It is also a major railhead on the East Coast Railway, bifurcated from Khurda Road Jn. The Railway Station of Puri is in The heart of the town and near to all hotels. If you arrive by train go to the Odishan State Tourist counter at the station for advice, they are usually very helpful and speak English. The MCO Booth is also quite helpful. Locals speak Oriya. Due to the presence of people from various parts of India there would not be a language problem. Hindi is also widely used. Some locals even speak Bengali.

Get around

You can use cycle or auto rickshaws but agree a price before you set off. There are places on C.T Road where you can hire an Enfield motorbike, good if you want to drive along the coast to Konark(Sun Temple). A cycle rickshaw is in the range of 5-20 rupees.

Shree Jagannath Puri Temple. One of the four dhams ie four most sacred pilgrimage places of Hindus. Constructed in 11th century and is the starting point of the world famous Rath Yatra held in July. Entry is limited to Hindus. Do lean against the Shani temple and watch the summit of the temple and do savour the temple food or bhog. The temple complex is huge and has some very interesting stories associated, priests or pandas are generally the ones who conduct the non Oriya people around and generally mention all these stories although they can demand exorbitant amounts; bring it down to something reasonable. It is possible to go into the sanctum sanctorum and touch the deities in the main temple for a fee.

The most important festival of Odisha,Ratha Yatra or the Chariot Festival (earlier known as Car Festival to the Europeans), is held with religious grandeur at Puri, the seashore town in Odisha.

Shree Lokanath Temple Dedicated to Lord Shiva, is said to be the place where Lord Shiva hid himself from Shani, under a pond. The Shiva Linga here is partially submerged and the pond is teeming with fish. Priests here tend to be very strict so do maintain etiquette.

The Golden Beach of Puri during sunset

Enjoy the splendour of the Golden Beach of Puri. It is ideal for surfing and cool for a dip. The beach is covered in golden sand. The waves can also be high and rough during purnima (full moon). Also, "Please Do not litter the beach" to keep its magnificent view intact. You have to be careful about swimming off the Chakra Tirtha Rd end of the beach because there is a canal that carries raw sewerage into the ocean.
